Girl Interrupted at Her Music

1st Grade: recorder class.  

2nd - 4th Grade: recorder class, piano lessons, piano chamber camp. 

4th - 6th Grade: piano lessons, flute lessons, specialized middle school for the arts, piano ensemble, youth orchestras, pre-college summer programs for flute at Manhattan School of Music, [tragedy, repression], …singing? 

7th - 8th Grade: all of the above, voice lessons. 

High School: top performing arts high school in NYC for voice, [eating disorders], choirs, [overwhelming self-doubt], practiced singing 5 hours a day, [vocal damage], opera workshop, voice performance classes, solos with orchestra, [social isolation], got into 7 major conservatories as a mezzo soprano.

College: New England Conservatory of Music for classical vocal performance, great friends, great teachers, constant reassurance from teachers and peers, solos with orchestra, 4.0

Sophomore Year: [3 months of depression, severe eating disorders, personality disorders, paranoia, anxiety, self-harm, social isolation, several friends are hospitalized or experience tragedy, push everyone away, fail classes, get rejected by the opera, get rejected by a bass player, take time off to get help but so far can’t find a program covered by insurance]

And suddenly, I’ve developed the peculiar habit of playing the viola.  I wonder, should I be concerned?
